Exploring Delhi this Earth Day
Earth Day celebrated on April 22, across the world, started
in 1970 to create awareness about damage caused to our earth. Over the years,
it’s become a day to talk about key environmental issues. Ok. That’s all. Rest
you may read on internet.
I only want to talk to you about the awesome things you can
do in Delhi, on April 22, which is conveniently a Saturday. Here are some things happening in your city,
in April:
1.
Deciduous trees now have new leaves. From
translucent green to spectacular red to blushing pink, the new leaves come in
quite a range of colour. My favourite place to see some stunningly red trees
(Khirk) is Rose Garden Forest, opposite IIT Delhi.
2.
Bougainvillea are crazy with colour right now.
And butterflies, especially the Common Mormon ( you will find them on citrus
shrubs and curry leaves) are bustling around busily. At any park near you.
3.
Siris trees are flowering and making Delhi-ites
heady with fragrance. Hauz Rani Forest is largely covered by these trees – and
the bamboo patch at the entrance has the nicest bunch of robins, flycatchers
and sun birds – if you go early morning.
4.
And following tradition, it’s a good idea to
plant neem, kachnar and other saplings near your house on Earth Day, so that
they grow to a decent height by the time it’s peak summer. All government
nurseries give these saplings for free. I love Mehrauli Government Nursery
because it’s gorgeous and is attached to my all-time favourite place – Sanjay
Van.
So this April 22, go and connect
with Earth. At a green spot near you.
