Getting Unpopular- Part 2
As we publicly berate mindless acts of eco-vandalism, we continue to get unpopular.
In a sudden moment of methodical madness, I decided to categorise us unpopular earth lovers, according to primary passion.
In a sudden moment of methodical madness, I decided to categorise us unpopular earth lovers, according to primary passion.
1.
Tree planters – there is a fanatical band of
tree growers, thanks to whom we still continue to breathe. They are planting despite
‘objections’ (people want to park cars, rather than breathe), with or without
permissions. They are clinging to trees to stop them from getting chopped and
becoming very unpopular in their neighbourhood.
2.
Car avoiders – my CXO-level friends hang from metro
rails and reach office beaming with sweat and joy. They don’t have to swerve through
crazy traffic and also get to be green. They are very unpopular with colleagues
who just don’t ‘get’ why their boss has to be so ‘cheap’.
There is also a refreshing surge in
cycle-users – who brave Carbon Monoxide and death by accident, to save the
planet.
3.
Zero wasters – They bathe with half a bucket of
water and go crazy if you don’t lick your plate clean. They reuse, recycle rather than buy. By just being mindful
of how much they need, they save the world enormous amounts of resources. But
they lose friends when they refuse to tolerate waste of others. My already
significant unpopularity has grown as I force people to gulp down any water
that they may have casually poured into a glass, among other things. I am
mostly eating my meals alone, as a result.
4.
Zero plastic users- this is an Environment Day
post and we are out to #beatplasticpollution. I don’t need to mention how we
don’t use plastic bags anymore, or straws or disposable cutlery. I am assuming
that this is the norm now. My favourite people
in this category, are those who expound the virtue of all natural menstrual
products, at any social gathering. The number of reasons why this makes them
unpopular, is largest amongst all.
So this World Environment Day, choose your cause. And go
crazy shouting, forcing, activating about it to whoever will listen and
especially those who won’t. It’s really quite over-rated to be popular by
keeping mum about things that matter.
